From Items to Scenes, How Much can Matter Bring to the Smart Home?-Part One

Recently, CSA Connectivity Standards Alliance officially released the Matter 1.0 standard and certification process, and held a media conference in Shenzhen.

In this activity, the present guests introduced the development status and future trend of Matter 1.0 in detail from the standard R&D end to the test end, and then from the chip end to the device end of the product. At the same time, in the round table discussion, several industry leaders respectively expressed their views on the trend of smart home market, which is very forward-looking.

“Roll” new height- Software can also be certified by Matter

“You have a pure software component that can be a Matter certified product that can directly control all the Matter hardware devices, and I think that’s going to have a transformational impact.” — Su Weimin, President of CSA Connectivity Standards Alliance China.

As the relevant practitioners of the smart home industry, the most concerned is the support degree of the new standards or protocols for the relevant products

In introducing the latest work of Matter, Suweimin has highlighted the key points.

It is understood that the hardware products supported by the Matter standard include lighting electrical, HVAC control, control equipment and bridge, TV and media equipment, curtain curtain, security sensor, door lock and other equipment.

In the future, hardware products will be extended to cameras, household white electricity and more sensor products. According to Yang Ning, director of OPPO’s standards department, the Matter may also be extended to in-car applications in the future.

But the biggest news is that Matter now implements authentication of software components. First of all, we need to know why the release of the Matter 1.0 standard has been delayed.

According to Su Weimin, “More difficulty comes from how to compromise between competitors.”

Among the sponsors and backers of Matter are Google, Apple and other giants with a hand in smart home products. They have a great product, a user base that has been working hard for years, and a lot of data to improve the user experience.

However, as competitors, they still choose to cooperate in order to break down the barriers, which must be motivated by greater interests. After all, breaking down barriers to “interoperability” requires sacrificing your own users. It’s a sacrifice because what sustains a brand is nothing more than the quality and quantity of its customers.

To put it simply, the giants are helping to get the Matter off the ground at the risk of “churn.” The reason to take this risk is that Matter can bring more money.

Greater benefits include but are not limited to: from a macro perspective, “interoperability” can bring a greater increase in the smart home market; From a micro point of view, enterprises can obtain more user data through “interoperability”.

So, too, because the account must be worked out in advance — who gets what. So let the Matter go on and on.

At the same time, the implementation of “interoperability” also leads to another problem, which is that it makes product developers more “sloppy”. Because of the convenience of users, expand their choice space, so that they can choose more brands of products. In such an environment, manufacturers can no longer rely on “what’s missing in my ecosystem” to motivate users to buy a specific product, but must use more differentiated competitive advantages to gain users’ favor.

Now, the certification of software components by Matter has taken this “volume” to a new level, and it is important because it directly affects the interests of enterprises.

At present, basically every enterprise that does smart home product ecology will have its own central control software, which is responsible for controlling the switch of products and monitoring the status of products. Often just need to develop an App, or even a small program to achieve. However, although its role is not as big as imagined, it can bring a lot of revenue to the enterprise. After all, the collected data such as user preferences are generally the “killer app” for related product improvement.

As software can also pass the Matter certification, in the future, no matter hardware products or platforms, enterprises will face stronger competition, and there will be more software enterprises to enter the market, a piece of the big cake of smart home.

However, on the positive side, the implementation of the Matter 1.0 standard, the improvement of interoperability and higher support have brought greater survival opportunities for the enterprises that make single products under the subdivision track, and at the same time eliminated some products with weak functions virtually.

Besides, the content of this conference is not only products, about the smart home market, in the “roundtable discussion” on the sales scenario, B end, C end market and other aspects of the industry leaders contributed a lot of valuable views.

So smart home market is to do B end or C end market? Let’s wait for the next article ! Loading……
