LoRa Cloud™ location-based services are now available to customers through Tencent Cloud Iot development platform, Semtech announced at a media conference on 17th Jan, 2022.
As part of LoRa Edge™ geolocation platform, LoRa Cloud is officially integrated into Tencent Cloud iot development platform, enabling Chinese users to quickly connect LoRa Edge-based iot devices to the Cloud, combined with Tencent Map’s highly trusted and high-coverage Wi-Fi location capabilities. For Chinese enterprises and developers to provide flexible, low power consumption, cost-effective geolocation services.
LoRa, as an important low-power iot technology, has been widely used in the Chinese market. According to Huang Xudong, vice president of Sales of Semtech China, as of December 2021, more than 2.7 million LorA-BASED gateways have been deployed globally, with more than 225 million Lora-based end nodes, and the LoRa alliance has more than 400 company members. Among them, there are more than 3,000 LoRa industry chain enterprises in China, creating a strong ecosystem.
Semtech’s LoRa Edge ultra-low power positioning solution and accompanying LR110 chip, released in 2020, are already widely used worldwide for logistics and asset management applications. This laid the hardware foundation for LoRa Edge. Gan Quan, LoRa market strategy director of Semtech China, introduced the cloud positioning system due to the fragmentation and differentiation of the Internet of Things. Many iot applications require better battery life, lower costs and a more flexible operating model. If Wi-Fi positioning is mainly indoor and GNSS positioning is mainly outdoor, LoRa Edge geolocation solution can support both indoor and outdoor.
“LoRa Edge is a long life, low cost, wide coverage and medium accuracy geolocation system with Internet of Things DNA,” gan said. Reduce costs and power consumption through LoRa network transmission, and provide services through the cloud. Application scenarios include asset tracking in industrial parks, cold chain monitoring, bike-sharing tracking, cattle and sheep husbandry monitoring, etc.
Gan also emphasized that LoRa Edge is not positioned for every application, but for a specific group of projects. Of course, the system can be integrated to provide other types of location services: for example, higher precision positioning indoors with LoRa Edge plus UWB or BLE; For higher precision positioning outdoors, LoRa Edge + Differential high-precision GNSS is available.
Xia Yunfei, product architect of Tencent Cloud iot, added that LoRa Edge has a leading Edge in low power consumption and low cost, which is the focus of the collaboration between Tencent Cloud and Semtech.
The collaboration between Tencent Cloud and Semtech focuses on the integration of LoRa Edge’s capabilities in Tencent Cloud Iot development platform. LoRa Edge offers a low-power, low-cost positioning solution that reinforces Tencent Cloud IoT’s positioning capabilities in the low-power area. At the same time, with the help of Tencent Cloud IoT’s own product advantages — one-stop development services, unified location model and highly reliable and wide coverage of Wi-Fi location database, it can help partners improve development efficiency.
“Semtech’s announcement that LoRa Edge will be integrated into Tencent cloud iot development platform means LoRa Edge will be further deployed in China. Tencent Cloud will provide cloud services and location services, which is a big improvement. Since its launch in 2020, LoRa Edge has made significant breakthroughs in applications, enabling more solutions and applications to be deployed.” The partnership with Tencent Cloud will also boost a number of practical applications in China, Gan said. In fact, many domestic projects are already under way.
